Bad is the New Good – Meditations on HellBoy

The tagline “Believe it or not, he’s the good guy,” started a train of thoughts that eventually lead me to this Spirit Talk.

The line is from the poster for the new film of master storyteller, Guillermo del Toro, Hell Boy. The poster depicts an image of what appears to be a red demon, an image that could have been taken from a manual used in the Middle Ages by clergy to identify devils and demons.

The poster actually counted on the fact that we might not believe he is the good guy. Immediately I thought about the graphic novel I am currently reading called Lucifer. In that story, the fallen angel takes residence in Los Angeles after retiring from running Hell. As you get to know the unlikely hero, you cannot help falling for the charming Devil and identifying with him. He is kind of intriguing, deep, and multi-dimensional. Common notions up until a few decades ago, would have made me a Satanist for reading such a thing.

Then I thought about the last three installations of Star Wars, where the antagonist, Darth Vader, is the protagonist. We cry when toddler Vader is being hurt, we smile at his victories and all this time we know that he is the bad guy! What is this all about? A reversal of magnetic fields? A shift in the polarities? Or maybe it’s called balancing, assimilation, union, convergence… Maybe the old stories of good versus bad and moral rigidity are melting. Maybe these stories that we are so attracted to show that we are ready to see life not as black and white, but in all shades of gray as well. After all, there is no good and there is no bad. God is One…

For a long time I was trying to find a name to the age we are living in right now. The age Kabbalists call “Shabbat,” the Mayan dub the “End of Time” and Astrologers label the “Age of Aquarius.” It dawned on me when I looked at the poster of a demon from Hell that is risking his life to save humanity, that this is the Age of Convergence. All the opposite lines are now meeting in the center; the spokes unite in the axis, what alchemists have named – Axis Mundi – the immoveable spot of enlightenment. In alchemy, the symbol of Aquarius is used to represent the process of assimilation. It is the age of wireless waves, where everything is synchronized. I am happy the bad guy turned good, I am happy we can speak openly about who we are, our shadows, our fears. I am sure Jung, the great psychologist who coined the term synchronicity, would be delighted to live in this age, where we as a culture, are doing the best to assimilate our collective shadow. A concept Jung emphasized as extremely important in order to create healing.

I had a reading with a woman a few weeks ago in Turkey, who told me flat out, that besides the birth of her two kids, her Cancer was the best thing that happened to her in her life. She had a stage three Cancer. It shook her so badly that she changed her life and now she is a far happier a woman and mother. It made me think about how the Buddha had a visit from Hellboy as he was meditating under the Bodhi Tree and because he managed to over come the three temptations presented by the Devil, he realized, like the lady that had Cancer, that he is enlightened.
Then Christ came zooming into my consciousness, with his own visit from the Devil in the desert who also presented three temptation which by passing them, Christ had attained a higher realization of his mission. I guess this means there will be Hellboy three coming soon, since from the days of the Buddha, stories come in three sequels…

This Full Moon (July 17-18) presents a powerful time to confront your shadow and let the light of the moon shine through. It is a Full Moon in Capricorn and the Tarot card the rules Capricorn is the Devil, or Hellboy. This weekend we will all have to face our Pan, our Hellboy, our Devil. Under the light of the moon we need to dance with him/her and welcome that aspect of ourselves into our consciousness.

Save the beast from the unconscious and bring it into the light. We don’t need to drown it in holly water. It did not work that well before, obviously they are still here. However, if you realize Holly Water is the symbol of compassion and unconditional love then you can use that Holly Water, not the H2O found in Churches but in your heart. Only then will you be able to transform enemy into a friend, foe into alley, and devil into angel…

Happy Full Moon

Love,
