Now, that Mars has turned direct, everything is lined up for us to spring into action and make things happen. From the end of last year, many of our projects and enterprises have gone array, met with resistance, and didn’t pan out the way we wanted. Even the mighty Toyota, a powerful representative of Mar energy was humbled and put down on its knees. When I heard about the Toyota recalls (retrograde of the cars), I could not stop and wonder if these sophisticated vehicles, containing the world’s most advanced computer systems, have developed some sprouts of artificial intelligence. Maybe their “decision” to “runaway” and accelerate against the driver’s will is the initial spark of the machine’s rebellion against their human masters.

I speak from experience. I have had a Prius for the last six years, we are, thank God, or thank the Machine, on very good terms, but many a time the valet would complain that my car refuses to start or even worse, decline to let them in. But seriously, however positive I want to be about the Toyota issue, greed, misinformation, and miscommunication are the more probable causes of the accidents rather than the emergence of a new machine consciousness. Oh, well, to be on the safe side, I would start being nice to your machines, just in case there is a seed of truth in the last paragraph…lol…

March 20^th is Spring Equinox, the Astrological New Years, as well as the Biblical New Year. It is also the beginning of the Persian and Bahá'í calendars. Mother Day is celebrated on this day in many Arab countries, maybe because of the ancient association between the goddess of dawn and the Spring Equinox, but I doubt they will be very pleased with this connection. If you live in Los Angeles, I will be doing a workshop on Spring Equinox, Passover, and Easter the 24^th of March.

On Spring Equinox the great feathered serpent of Kukulkan climbs the Chichen Itza pyramid, offering himself for sacrifice, just as Attis, the vegetation god of Phrygia sacrificed himself only to resurrect three days later. Sounds familiar?

What these enduring cross cultural tales, of heroes and heroines sacrificing themselves only to resurrect as gods tell us is that around the spring equinox we all have the ability to sacrifice our ego so that our higher-self, our divine spark, can be reborn. It is around March 20^th (in the Northern Hemisphere), that the energy of the planet allows such a spiritual upgrade to transpire. These holidays, Passover, Easter, Nowruz (Persian New Year), Vishu (Tamil New Year) are the festive garments the Spring Equinox wears to make this cosmic energy more felicitous for us.

Welcome to Valentine’s and Chinese New Year weekend. This weekend promises a big swell of celestial energy waves for all of you free-spirit surfers . First, we have a wonderful New Moon on Saturday, the 13^th around 7pmPST. New Moon always brings a fresh new outlook at life and since it is a New Moon in Aquarius, it will allow you to easily access new friends, reconnect to groups, community, organizations, as well as other aspects of Aquarian aspects of life that include hope, computers, intuition, innovation, and technology. However, this weekend has many more surprises. The New Moon in Aquarius always marks the Chinese New Year. This weekend begins the year of the Golden Tiger. The tiger represents courage, fearlessness, determination, as well s as the ability to go and hunt what you need. The Tiger infuse us with optimism, passion and drive. In general, if all goes well, this is the year you will be able to both purr with pleasure and roar your strengths.

The Tiger is the Yin – feminine aspect of the Chinese Zodiac, it represents that counterpart of the Yang masculine Dragon. This is a year to be receptive to new directions in life. After all, the divine feminine is often time associated with the tiger. That is why you will see Durga in the Hindu mythology as well as Sekmet from the Ancient Egyptian pantheon riding a tiger.

In Feng Shui, the Tiger represents the west side of the home, property or office. Make sure you make sage, cleanse, and renovate the west side of your residence or business. West in Kabbalah and Western mysteries is also associated with the feminine, and since the Sun “dies” in the west, the West in Ancient Egypt as well as Kabbalah is afford us the ability letting go (the Tiger is a killer after all) of whatever we do not need that has been blocking our life for the last twelve years.

And if we are already in the West, let’s talk about Valentine’s Day. The Catholic Church has produced more Saints then Hollywood did starlets. There are three Valentine Saints and all have different stories. History often mixes with myths especially if monks are the ones recording the stories. In the video I made for you guys, staring my new Begal tiger cat, I talk about one of these saints.

I think it is interesting that this year the Easter Chinese New Year happen to be synchronized with the Western celebration of relationships and friendship. I see it as a great sign that relationships between the East and West are becoming stronger. I just hope Politicians on both sides of the globe pay attention to these synchronicities. Maybe we should start electing Yoga practicing officials…

February starts off with an intense square between Pluto and Saturn. It's like watching UFC fight between two guys who are fighting dirty as they square off in the ring. It's not all bad, it means you just have to be a little more careful and cautious, plan your days better and play it safe. You might have some issues with figures of authority, the government, the police...

February 6 brings some grace as Jupiter and Pluto dance to a mystical tune. Dreams, meditation and creative visualizations around that time will bring us a lot of fast results. As I often explained, the year, energetically speaking, seldom begins on January 1^st. I hope you have not given up on your New Year’s Resolutions. The best time to start will be the 16^th of January, on the second day of the Lunar Month, in other words, a day after the New Moon Eclipse. It will also be easier since on the same day Mercury goes direct and it makes things flow much smoother. Another big event coming up is Jupiter moving to Pisces. In the last two nights I gave two workshops in London. Even though they were packed, we didn’t have a single Aquarius in the crowd. I found it very odd since usually there are plenty Aquarians in my classes. After all, Aquarius is the sign of Astrology. But then I got it. They did not want to hear the bad news. They did not want to acknowledge that after hosting Jupiter, the planet of abundance and luck, for a year, they will have to hand it over to Pisces. Of course, we had plenty of Pisces in the class, flocking to hear how 2010 will be their year. But as is always the case with Pisces, the sign of sacrifice, they will have to share Jupiter with Aries which will be hosting Jupiter from June 4^th to September 9^th. Since Jupiter is the ruler of Pisces, the months that Pisces will have Jupiter will be very powerful for them. So from January 17^th, the Pisces among you will get a kiss from God, a nudge to move forward. Watch this video that explains it all:

The study offered a practical advice: in order to raise the percentage of success one must plan the resolution ahead of time. Most resolutions that failed were formulated on New Years. They were spontaneous, made under the influence of certain drugs or substances and did not stand the test of time. This means that now, upon reading this communication, you should set some time aside, sit down and come up with your resolution. This way you will have a week or so to rephrase, fix and edit your resolve so that by the time the clock strike midnight on the 31st, you will have your ready to go, failed proof resolution.

Personally, I think there is an astrological reason why resolutions don’t work. There is nothing energetically significant about January first and therefore starting a new diet, a new workout regiment or any other wish has no help from above. It’s like planting a tree in a spot that gets no sunlight. A better time to start the actual program would be a day after the Solar eclipse on Jan 16th. But this is also tricky since this year, Mars, the planet of action, drive and passion, is retrograding from until March 10. This can cause delays and frustrations for any new enterprise and endeavors.

According to the Law of Beginning, one can discern the outcome of a process by paying a close attention to how and when the endeavor begun. This principle along with the alchemical axiom of “As Above So Below” is the foundation on which Astrology is built. That is the reason why Astrologers would ask you for the day and place of birth in order to cast a chart. To understand the underlining energies of 2010, one must look at how the year begins. 2010 kicks in on a Lunar Eclipse, with Mercury and Mars retrograding. Since the Full Moon symbolizes ending, 2010 teaches us firsthand the Kabbalistic concept described in the Book of Creation (published by Wiser) “The end is embedded in the beginning and the beginning in the end.” This year begins with an end. The message is simple, before we can march into a new beginning that start in the spring with Jupiter and Uranus moving into Aries, we must let go and get rid of the past. Make a list before the New Year of all the things you want get rid of. Most likely they are related to your chosen resolution and can help clarify and focus your wishes for 2010.

Mercury retrograde which begun in Dec 26th will go direct on Jan 15th. Better wait with major projects, weddings, businesses and other engagements until the third week of January. This means it will take us all longer to come into full gear after the New Year.

Since Mars is retrograde until March 10th, we are in the danger of acting before thinking as well as initiating unnecessary conflicts. Choose your battle wisely and don’t open too many fronts. To make things even more lunatic, we have an Annular Solar Eclipse on January 15th. This will be a powerful New Moon and you can say that the year will truly begin that day. On Feb 14th we have another important New Moon, which is also the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Tiger. It is an interesting synchronicity that the year of the Tiger will begin with Mars retrograding in the feline sign of Leo. We have to be careful not be predators and not to hunt unless we are hungry as the tiger does sometimes…

Astrologically speaking, 2010 is far more significant than the year 2012 which seems to have grown into a New Age industry. So buckle up, put on the Red Shoes and Let’s Dance… Read More

Pluto, the planet of transformation is now traveling through Capricorn, the sign of structure. Since it takes Pluto 248 years to orbit the Sun and since there are twelve signs, Pluto spends roughly twenty years in each sign. When Pluto transits through Capricorn, it tends to destroy and resurrect social structures. It breaks down old traditions, smashes the status quo and creates a new tradition. When Pluto moved in to Capricorn, fall of 2008, Wall Street experienced a recession. I have written about the process in a prior newsletter. Before we examine the history of Pluto in Capricorn, I would like to share with you a conversation I had with my Capricorn nephew, Yuval, right when Capricorn moved into Pluto. A year ago, I called my sister to wish her a happy birthday, but Yuval, thirteen years old, was quicker then her and got to the phone first. I guess, since I am an Aries, the sign of identity, I expect everyone to know who I am when I call. I also expected Yuval to recognize my voice, albeit I am sure he was in the midst of playing on the computer building empires or destroying enemy starships. Here is a transcription of the conversation:

Gahl: Hey Yuval
Yuval: Who is this?
Gahl: God
Yuval: No it’s not.
Gahl: Yes, it’s God.
Yuval: I don’t believe in God.
Gahl: What?! Are you crazy? What if I am God? That is the last thing you should say to God!
Yuval: Who is this?
Gahl: See, you don’t even know! What if I am God, you are in trouble!
Yuval: Come on! Is this Gahl?
Gahl: Don’t change the subject! You don’t believe in God? Yuval: Not in an old man who is standing in the sky.
Gahl: He is actually sitting, he is old.

And now for some history… While most Astrologer trace the work of Jesus of Nazareth to when Pluto was in Sagittarius (the sign of philosophy and religion), Pluto was in Capricorn when Paul of Tarsus made a religion out of Jesus’ teaching converting pagans into Christianity, thus creating the new tradition of the Church. Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus (c. 22 December 244 – 3 December 311), known as Diocletian, became emperor or Rome in 284. He transformed the ancient tradition of Rome by creating the Tetrarchy – the division of the empire to four. Many believe this move helped Rome survive. He was also the last pagan emperor.

Next cycle of Pluto in Capricorn brought the reign of Justinian I who built the Hagia Sofia in Constantinople. He restuctured the Roman law, the Corpus Juris Civilis, which is still the basis of civil law in many modern states.

Next Pluto in Capricorn brought Western Europe Charlemagne, a short lived beacon of light in the very dark ages. Many believe it was his empire that protected Europe from the Islamic empire.

It was in Pluto in Capricorn that Martin Luther created the Protestant Reformation in Germany while in Cortez landed in Mexico destroying the Aztec empire and creating what will later be Latin America. In the next Pluto and Capricorn cycle, the USA was born. So what is next? What structure or tradition are we about to break? What will we replace it with? Some believe that the USA homogony of the world will end and that a new world order, democratic and non-nationalistic will replace it. Some go even further and say that the Age of Reason will be replaced with the Age of Spirit. I try not to guess, I watch and learn. I adhere to Hegel who was quoted saying:

Saturn in Virgo (Fall 2007-Fall 2009) made us aware of accounting discrepancies on a personal as well as global level. It helped bring down the hubris of certain financial institution, thus orchestrating the current financial recession. Saturn in Libra on the other hand, can help us fix our relationships. When Saturn activates the archetype of Libra it brings about major changes in our partnerships. In the process of fixing and mending the way we relate to people, issues may arise that have been hiding, like dust in the corner. These issues relate to how our parents or caretakers dealt with each others when we were growing up. You can expect some of those early childhood imprints to resurrect. They are coming up into the light no for us to shove them back into the dark. They are resurfacing because they heard that Saturn is in Libra and it’s the most auspicious time for them to be identified, accepted and healed.

Libra is also the sign of contracts and law. We can expect some changes in the justice system, who knows, maybe even legalizing gay marriages. There are going to be very interesting Supreme Court decisions in the next two years that will reflect on the meaning of many different country’s constitutions (if they have one). Art, beauty, music, fashion and design would also go through a makeover. Libra is ruled by Venus, the goddess of beauty. It could be that we will redefine what is beautiful and how much it’s worth…

Since when Saturn is in Libra it is considered exalted, meaning it has the most powerful expression, we can expect Karma to become instant, as John Lennon so eloquently foretold us. What is Rosh-Hashanah and Why Should I Care?

“In the seventh month, on the first of the month (New Moon), shall be for you a day of rest, a remembrance of the sounding of the shofar” --Leviticus 23:23-25.

If you are human, or consider yourself an offspring of Adam and Eve, then your mythological birthday is coming up on the New Moon, September 18th. Let me be the first or perchance the only one to wish you – Happy Birthday! Make sure you buy yourself a gift; besides helping the economy it will make you feel better.

According to rabbinical lore, Adam and Eve, our primal parents, were created on Rosh Hashanah, which traditionally falls on the New Moon of the seventh month (see quote above). A closer look at the biblical text reveals that God did not only create Adam and Eve on the sixth day, but also gave birth to the concept of relationships. Friday, Veneris in Latin, named after Venus, is the day Adam and Eve were born. The fact we were created under the influence of a benevolent planet is a reassurance that we cannot be that bad after all.

Since the biblical and zodiac year begins in Aries, then Libra, the seventh sign is the month mentioned in Leviticus. Libra, ruled by Venus, is the sign of relationship, marriage and contracts. The fact that our common ancestors, Adam and Eve, were created on a New Moon in Libra is a great sign for all of our relationships. It means that embedded in our mythological “DNA” is the potential of having harmonious and balanced relationships. To this affect, at least according to Astrology and the bible, we are innately good.

On Rosh Hashanah it is accustomed to blow the Shofar - the ram’s horn. This ancient ritual is multi-layered and carries a great deal of symbolism. The Ram is associated with Aries, the sign that begins the biblical as well as Astrological New Year. On the zodiac wheel, Aries is located opposite to Libra. Together they create the first set of opposing signs. You can say that Aries (ruled by Mars, the archetype of Adam) falls in love with Libra (ruled by Venus, the archetype of Eve) on Rosh Hashanah.

The symbolism of the New Moon of the Seventh Month goes even deeper considering the fact that Rosh Hashanah is celebrated precisely halfway through the zodiac. With six signs before and six signs after, Rosh Hashanah is a watershed of energies. According to astrology the year is divided into two main parts. The first half stretching from spring to the end of summer is masculine and active, while the second half from fall to the end of winter is feminine and receptive. The borderline between these two halves is the Fall Equinox when the day and night, the masculine and feminine are equal and balanced. That is the mythos-logic of having the Fall Equinox mark the beginning of the sign Libra, the sign of the scales. This year the Equinox takes place on September 22nd a few days past Rosh Hashanah. Astrology asserts that in the masculine extrovert part of the year, which is now coming to a close, humanity is busy acting, doing, building, sawing, reaping, working, collecting and creating. During the feminine introvert part of the year, we are focused more on assessing, reevaluating, deepening, editing, processing, dreaming, healing and assimilating everything we have done in the active part of the year. The wise rabbis and biblical writers noticed this cyclical dynamics and established a 10 day period following Rosh Hashanah dedicated to atonement. The ten days of contemplations leading to Yom Kippur are a kind of a transition between the active and reactive parts of the year. In Sanskrit this very process is called Karma, which means action and reaction. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, called the High Holy Days, are the Biblical version of Karma. “Whatever a man sows so shall he also reap.” Whatever actions you have taken from spring till this coming New Moon, now is the time to reflect, ask forgiveness, and take responsibility.

In Astrology, Saturn is the planet associated with Karma as well as the process of taking responsibility for past actions. Karma and Saturn define the process of Universal Justice. It is not surprising that the liturgy of the High Holy Days is loaded with prayers containing judicial terminology. The Orthodox Jews believe God has two books he reads and writes during the ten days following Rosh Hashanah: the book of the living and the book of the dead. They believe that God reviews all of our actions and decides what is the appropriate reaction: death or life. If God writes your name in the book of the living, you shall live and prosper. If, however, God decides to write your name in the book of the dead, you should hire a nice Jewish lawyer ASAP. Here is a quote from the most powerful prayer of Rosh Hashanah called Unetanah Tokef:

On Rosh Hashanah it is inscribed,
And on Yom Kippur it is sealed.
How many shall pass away and how many shall be born,
Who shall live and who shall die,
Who shall reach the end of his days and who shall not,
Who shall perish by water and who by fire,
Who by sword and who by wild beast,
Who by famine and who by thirst,
Who by earthquake and who by plague…

In Astrology, a planet’s power changes depending on the sign it is located in. Since Karma and Saturn are associated with divine justice, according to astrology, when Saturn is in Libra it exerts the most amount of influence. In the next two years, as Saturn moves to Libra for the first time in 30 years, we can expect a great deal of “burning of bad Karma.” In other words, we will all experience the reactions of the actions we took in the last thirty years. That is another reason to blow the shofar. The sound of the ram’s horn is said to obliterate and ward off demons, who we now a days call by their more spiritually correct names: negative energies, shame, regret, jealousy and disease. In folklore, the armies of elves, wizards and angels awake and gather at the sound of the ram’s horn. From August 22 - September 22 the Sun walks through the mountainous lands of Virgo. In the agricultural cycle on which Astrology is based, this is the time in the year we harvest what we have planted in the spring. Of course, the sawing of seeds in the spring includes besides fruits, vegetable and trees also thoughts, actions, and feelings. If you live around farms or talk to your local farmer at the Framer’s Market, they will assert that this is indeed the busy time of harvest. The harvest include, many seasonal vegetables, fruits and…yes, your Karma as well. Whatever a (wo)man sows so shall (s)he also reap…

On the next Full Moon, September 4^th, the forces of harvest will come to an accumulation. This upcoming Full Moon is very powerful and represents a time you can get rewarded for past action. This coming weekend is a great time to look back at what you did, thought, said, wrote and felt in the spring and in what way are these actions are connected to what is happening now. My astrological philosophy is that we are not passive recipient of the influence of the planets and stars. While it is true that they are luminary guides, they do not dictate our fate. They bring us to junctions but we chose the path. Now, that the Sun is in Virgo, by becoming a Virgo yourself, you can have the Sun shine upon you for the next few weeks. By assuming the traits, dressing with the qualities and teachings of Virgo, you can achieve more flow and success in your life.

How to Get Along with Virgos

Cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s. Then choose your words wisely, as if they were a scarce resource. If you send an email, spell-check twice.
Ask Virgos for advice. If they refuse and claim that they’re no expert (though they probably are), tell them that you value their insight anyway.
Be clean and tidy. Dress up to code, appropriate to the occasion. They don’t really approve of a casual or sloppy style.
When Virgos shift into argument mode, gently change the subject. It is hard to keep up with their logic and thoroughness. You can’t win an argument with a Virgo.
They love dining but prefer not to spend too much money on themselves. When you go out, select restaurants that are delicious but inexpensive.
Don’t get upset if Virgos are stingy with compliments. But if you ever do receive a compliment from a Virgo, then you will know that you really deserve it.
