Youthful June
The etymology of the month of June mirrors the astrological attribution of the month perfectly. The word “June” comes from the Latin Iunius, the namesake of the Roman goddess Juno (Hera for the Greeks), who, besides having the dubious pleasure of being Jupiter’s consort, was the queen of the gods and protector of marriage and family. That would allude to the second part of June, when the sign Cancer begins at the Solstice. Cancer is the sign of womb, home, family, and motherhood.
June’s name also stems from the Latin iuventas (youth), the source of words like juvenile. This reflects in the first part of June, governed by the archetype Gemini, the most youthful of signs, ruled by the trickster Mercury, who will also be retrograde from June 29 in Cancer until July 23.
Other notable events in June for juveniles are Jupiter’s transit from exaltation in Cancer to regality in Leo on June 30. Jupiter will bless the king of the zodiac for one year. While the protection of Jupiter will be lifted (Jupiter in Cancer makes everything look better than it is), his transition to Leo brings a flare of drama, ego inflation, childishness, and a need to control everything. However, it is also the bearer of love, happiness, creativity, sports, hobbies, and children. We just have to remember not to get intoxicated by Jupiter’s enhancement of the Leo archetypes, since in August the South Node will retrograde into Leo, asking us for 18 months to be less Leo and more Aquarius, less about the “I will” of Leo and more “We the People” of Aquarius.
Finally, we have the Solstice on June 21, dubbed the Gateway of Humanity. It is also the first day of Cancer, the sign that baptizes us with compassion and unconditional love.
